Celebrations play an important role in building connections between children, families, and educators. At Hoppers Crossing Montessori Centre, we value opportunities that allow children to experience and learn about the diverse cultures within our community in a respectful and inclusive way.
On 4th March, our centre acknowledged Holi, often known as the Festival of Colours. The day provided a joyful and engaging opportunity for children and educators to come together and explore a cultural celebration through age-appropriate activities and shared experiences.
Our focus during the celebration was not only on enjoyment, but also on learning and cultural appreciation. Educators spoke with children about how different communities celebrate special occasions in unique ways. Through these discussions and experiences, children began to understand that people around the world may have different traditions, and that each tradition deserves respect and recognition.
At our Centre, we approach cultural celebrations thoughtfully to ensure they are inclusive and respectful to all families. We aim to create opportunities where children can observe, ask questions, and learn about cultural traditions without making assumptions or placing emphasis on one culture over another.
This experience aligns with the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF), particularly:
- Outcome 1 – Identity: Children develop a sense of belonging when their backgrounds and experiences are acknowledged within the learning environment.
- Outcome 2 – Community: Children learn to respect diversity and recognise that communities are made up of people with different cultural traditions and perspectives.
- Outcome 4 – Learning: Children build curiosity and knowledge through real-life experiences and shared celebrations.
With many families in our community coming from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, events like these provide meaningful opportunities for children to see their cultures acknowledged while also learning about others.
By celebrating and learning together, we continue to nurture an environment where every child, family, and culture is valued, respected, and included.
