Sustainability Incursion – “Drip Drop, Don’t Waste a Drop”

We recently welcomed an engaging sustainability incursion focused on the importance of protecting our precious water resources. The session began with a powerful visual journey, showing how beautiful our planet Earth is — with its sparkling clean oceans, flowing rivers, and natural water sources. This immediately captured the children’s attention and curiosity.

The children confidently shared their understanding of how we use water in our everyday lives — for drinking, bathing, washing clothes, cooking, and cleaning. They demonstrated strong awareness by explaining that ocean water is salty and not safe for drinking. Children thoughtfully added that we must use clean water for showering and that swimming in dirty water is unsafe. It was wonderful to see their confidence and knowledge shine through.

As the presentation continued, the images of polluted and dirty water sparked concern and deep thinking among the children. They recognised that pollution impacts everyone, but especially the sea creatures who live in the water. The children discussed how people sometimes throw rubbish and plastic into the ocean, which can be harmful and even fatal to marine life.

A special highlight of the incursion was meeting a friendly turtle who had been swimming to visit our Centre. The children were curious to know why he was late. The turtle shared  his story — while swimming, he felt hungry and saw what looked like his favourite food, a jellyfish. However, after eating it, he realised it was actually a plastic bag. His tummy began to hurt, and he felt very unwell.

This story created a strong emotional connection. The children responded with empathy and concern, commenting that we must take care of the treasures nature has given us. They recognised that protecting the environment keeps animals — and ourselves — safe and healthy.

The children then participated in an interactive activity. Ocean animals were “trapped” under piles of rubbish, and the children were given a choice: be an Eco Bug who helps clean up, or a Litter Bug who ignores the problem. As you might have guessed, all our friends proudly chose to be Eco Bugs! They eagerly cleared away the rubbish, rescuing the sea creatures and allowing them to breathe fresh, clean water again.

The incursion concluded with a powerful message — each of us can make a difference by using water responsibly, avoiding littering, and ensuring we do not waste water unnecessarily. Small, mindful actions help protect our Earth and ensure a safe and healthy future for everyone.

This experience not only strengthened the children’s understanding of sustainability but also nurtured empathy, responsibility, and environmental stewardship.

Together, we can care for our planet — drip by drop.
