Smoking Ceremony: Honouring Bunurong Country 21st Feb 2025

At our early learning service, we recognise the importance of fostering deep connections with the land on which we live, learn, and play. Actively engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives allows us to respect and care for Country in meaningful ways, acknowledging the wisdom, philosophies, and practices of First Nations peoples.

Today, on Bunurong Country, we had the privilege of welcoming Uncle Rob, a proud Taungurung Elder and Traditional Owner, who shared his deep knowledge of the land, skies, and waterways. Uncle Rob introduced the children to the stories of Bunjil and Waa, the creators of the land, helping them understand the cultural significance of these ancestral beings.

The ceremony began with an Acknowledgment of Country, followed by the lighting of a sacred fire using natural wood and gum leaves. As the fragrant smoke rose, Uncle Rob invited educators and children to step forward and cleanse themselves in the smoke, a ritual believed to offer both spiritual and physical healing.

The Smoking Ceremony was a deeply grounding experience, reinforcing our commitment to learning from and honouring the traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
