Learning About Dog Safety: A Hands-On Experience at Montessori Minds

At Hoppers Crossing Montessori Minds Kindergarten and Childcare, we believe some of the most valuable learning experiences happen when children can explore, ask questions and learn through real-life experiences.

Recently, our children enjoyed a special Dog Safety Excursion, giving them the opportunity to learn how to safely interact with dogs through songs, fun educational activities and hands-on experiences with a real dog.

Learning How to Be Safe Around Dogs

Dogs are a wonderful part of many families and communities, but it is important for children to understand how to approach and interact with them safely.

During our session, the children learned simple and practical ways to stay safe around dogs, including:

• How to approach a dog calmly and safely
• Asking permission before patting a dog
• Understanding when a dog may want space
• How to gently pat a dog
• Recognising some of the ways dogs communicate
• What to do if they encounter a dog they don’t know
• Why we should never disturb a dog while it is eating or sleeping

Rather than simply being told the rules, the children were able to see, practise and experience safe interactions for themselves.

Learning Through Songs and Fun

The session was filled with songs, games and age-appropriate activities designed to make learning about dog safety fun and memorable.

The children were encouraged to participate, answer questions and demonstrate what they had learned. These activities helped reinforce important safety messages in a way that was engaging and easy for young children to understand.

Meeting a Real Dog

One of the highlights of the day was meeting a real dog!

The children had the opportunity to practise what they had learned and experience gentle, supervised patting. For many children, this was a very exciting opportunity to interact with a dog in a safe and supportive environment.

Having a real dog involved made the experience particularly meaningful. The children could put their learning into practice, observe the dog’s behaviour and understand the importance of being calm, gentle and respectful.

Learning That Goes Beyond the Classroom

At Montessori Minds, we value experiences that help children develop confidence, independence and an understanding of the world around them.

Our Dog Safety Excursion was more than just a fun day out. It provided the children with practical knowledge and skills that they can use in everyday life.

Most importantly, the children discovered that being around animals is about kindness, respect, patience and safety.

It was a wonderful day of learning, laughter and hands-on discovery — and our children certainly enjoyed meeting their four-legged teacher!
