Exploring the World of Mini Beasts: Eco Bug Incursion at Hoppers Crossing Montessori Centre

On February 12th, Hoppers Crossing Montessori Centre had the pleasure of hosting the Eco Bug program: Wiggly Worms and Creepy Crawlies. We were delighted to welcome Vee back from Ladybug Academy to lead this engaging and educational incursion.

The session focused on the vital role insects play in maintaining a healthy natural environment. The children explored different types of insects, their unique roles in nature, and the importance of composting through a hands-on experience with a worm farm and compost bin. They also learned about what foods worms can eat and developed a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Vee began by asking the children if they liked mini beasts and whether they were excited for the incursion. She then introduced a special bin, the worm farm or compost bin, which sparked enthusiasm among the children, especially when they realized they had one in the toddler yard!

A highlight of the session was meeting Wiggly Worm, the garden mascot, who delighted the children by sharing some of his favourite snacks that he likes to eat which included capsicum, watermelon, tea bags, and eggshells. As they explored the garden further, the children discovered a variety of fascinating insects that play a vital role in supporting plant life, such as bees and ladybugs.

Adding to the excitement, Vee introduced live beetle larvae, worms, and caterpillars, allowing the children to observe these creatures up close. Some were even brave enough to hold the beetle larvae and worms! However, the caterpillars remained untouched, as they feed on milkweed, which can cause skin irritation. This hands-on experience deepened the children’s understanding of the essential role insects play in the garden ecosystem.

Adding to the fun, Vee read a humorous poem about bugs, capturing the children’s curiosity and laughter. To wrap up the incursion, the children played an exciting game called Sleeping Worms, where they had to stay completely still when the music played, mimicking wiggly worms at rest.

This incursion was an enriching experience, sparking curiosity and fostering a deeper appreciation for the tiny creatures that play a big role in our environment. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Vee and Ladybug Academy for this wonderful learning opportunity!
