Celebrating Harmony Day at Hoppers Crossing Montessori Centre

On the 21st of March, Hoppers Crossing Montessori Centre came alive with vibrant colours, cultural pride, and a sense of unity as we celebrated Harmony Day. This special occasion is dedicated to inclusivity, respect, and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background. It was a day filled with learning, appreciation, and meaningful connections among our children, educators, and families.

Our children and educators embraced the spirit of Harmony Day by dressing in their traditional cultural attire, showcasing the beautiful diversity within our community. From colourful saris and elegant kimonos to bright Fijian prints and traditional Indigenous clothing, the centre was a lively display of global heritage. This provided a wonderful opportunity for children to learn about different cultural backgrounds, fostering an appreciation for the unique traditions and identities that make up our society.

One of the highlights of the day was the shared staff lunch, where educators brought in dishes from their cultural backgrounds. This communal feast was more than just about enjoying delicious food, it also was about storytelling and connection. Each dish carried personal significance, with educators sharing cherished memories and delightful insights about their meals. From Indian curries, snacks and deserts to Greek pastries and Asian delicacies, the event was a celebration of culture through taste and tradition.

Adding a unique educational element to our celebration, our educational leader, Delnaz, led an engaging incursion on Navroze, the Persian New Year. This festival, also celebrated on the 21st of March, marks the beginning of spring and is observed by many communities worldwide, including Persian, Parsi, Afghan, and Kurdish cultures. Delnaz shared the significance of Navroze, explaining the customs and traditions associated with it, such as the setting up of the Haft-Seen table, symbolic foods, and the emphasis on renewal and positivity. The children were captivated by the vibrant customs and enjoyed learning about the various ways people celebrate this festival across different regions of the globe.

Harmony Day at Hoppers Crossing Montessori Centre was more than just a celebration, it was a reflection of our commitment to fostering a culture of respect, inclusivity, and belonging. By embracing and learning about different cultural traditions, we nurture a sense of global citizenship in our children, empowering them to appreciate diversity from an early age.

Here’s to celebrating diversity every day!
