At Hoppers Crossing Montessori Centre, we had the privilege of welcoming a special visitor—Flynn the dog—along with his caregiver, Karen, who joined us for an engaging and educational pet safety incursion. The children from the Wattle and Waratah rooms had a truly enriching experience that blended learning with fun and compassion.
Before the children interacted with Flynn, Karen patiently introduced the key principles of safely and respectfully approaching a dog. She used clear, child-friendly language to explain how to recognise when a dog is open to being patted and when it’s best to give them space. Karen taught the children important safety rules, such as:
Always ask the owner first with polite words like, “May I pat your dog, please?”
Do not pat a dog if it is off-leash or without its owner nearby.
Avoid approaching dogs that are eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies.
Watch for signs that the dog may not want to be approached—and in those moments, remember the golden rule: “Let them be.”
The children showed great enthusiasm and understanding as they confidently repeated this important phrase— “Let them be”—demonstrating their growing awareness and empathy for animals.
To make the session even more memorable, Karen led the children in a joyful pet safety song. This musical component made the learning engaging and helped reinforce key messages in a fun and memorable way.
We were also delighted to have some of our wonderful parents join in the session. Your presence and participation helped strengthen the shared learning experience between home and school, and we sincerely thank you for your time and involvement.
This kind of incursion not only teaches children how to safely engage with pets but also fosters empathy, respect, and care—values we hold close in our early years program.
We look forward to our next session on June 27th, when the Bluebell and Orchid rooms will have the opportunity to meet Flynn and participate in this meaningful learning experience.
Stay tuned for more updates—and thank you once again for being part of our caring community!
