On Friday, the 11th of July, Hoppers Crossing Montessori Centre was buzzing with excitement as Myuna Farm brought their mobile petting zoo to our doorstep. The children were absolutely thrilled to welcome a variety of friendly farm animals into their learning environments.
The petting zoo experience allowed our children to get up close with a range of animals, including goats, sheep, chickens, roosters, ducks, guinea pigs, fluffy bunnies and even a long neck turtle. Many children bravely approached the animals, while others observed with wide eyed wonder before slowly building their confidence to join in.
It was a day filled with meaningful hands-on learning. The children had the opportunity to pet, feed, and even gently brush the animals. Educators supported the experience by encouraging gentle touch and respectful interactions, helping children understand the importance of kindness and care for living beings.
This farm experience was more than just fun, it was an opportunity for the children to deepen their understanding of animals, responsibility, and empathy. Many asked thoughtful questions about what the animals eat, how they are looked after, and where they live. Educators used these teachable moments to support inquiry-based learning. Following the visit, children enthusiastically shared their favourite moments during group time. Some chose to draw their favourite animals, while others retold stories of brushing a goat or feeding the baby sheep and ducks. Their excitement and engagement continued well into the day.
By bringing the farm to our Centre gave children the chance to connect with animals in a familiar, and safe space, making the experience rich and meaningful. This incursion supported children’s social-emotional development, spark their curiosity, and built lasting memories that they will cherish forever.
We thank Myuna Farm for their wonderful visit, and we look forward to many more experiences that connect our children with the natural world.
