At Hoppers Crossing Montessori Centre, we embrace opportunities to celebrate diversity and foster cultural understanding among our children. This month, we had the joy of celebrating the Thingyan Festival, Myanmar’s traditional New Year water festival, through a vibrant incursion led by one of our placement student, Jessica.
Jessica, with her Burmese background, proudly introduced the Thingyan Festival to the kindergarten rooms. With a bright smile and a confident presence, she shared stories, songs, and cultural traditions that are close to her heart. Through child-friendly visuals, vibrant decorations, and a fun mini water play experience, symbolising the joyful water-splashing custom of Thingyan. Jessica beautifully brought the festival to life, creating a meaningful and memorable experience for the children.
The children were captivated by the colours, sounds, and stories of Myanmar. They explored cultural stories, joined in music and movement, and learned simple Burmese greetings. Jessica’s confidence in sharing her heritage was truly inspiring, and the children responded with curiosity and respect, asking thoughtful questions and enthusiastically participating in the celebration.
Events like this play a vital role in building inclusive classrooms where every child feels seen, valued, and proud of who they are. We thank Jessica for giving us the chance to learn about the Thingyan Festival in such a meaningful way.
Happy Thingyan to all who celebrate!
