Aboriginal Project 2026 – Walking Together, Learning Together

At Hoppers Crossing Montessori Centre, we are deeply committed to embedding respectful and meaningful learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures into the fabric of everyday life at our centre. This year, our Aboriginal Project 2026 has been a truly enriching journey — for our children, our educators, and our whole community.

Our children have engaged with Aboriginal culture in a way that goes far beyond craft activities. This project has invited genuine curiosity, deep listening, and a growing sense of respect for the world’s oldest living culture.

What our children have been exploring:

Culture, Traditions & Connection to Country Our children have been learning that Aboriginal culture is rich, living, and deeply connected to the land. Through stories, discussions, and thoughtful exploration, they are beginning to understand what it means to have a connection to Country — and why that connection is so important to Aboriginal peoples.

Aboriginal Symbols, Art & Storytelling The children have shown a genuine fascination with Aboriginal symbols and art, discovering how images and patterns carry deep meaning and tell important stories about Country, community, and the natural world. Storytelling has become a favourite part of our days, with children eagerly listening to and retelling the stories they have encountered.

Caring for the Environment A central theme of our project has been the importance of caring for the environment. Our children have engaged in thoughtful conversations about why the land, water, and sky matter — and what it means to be a responsible steward of the world around us. These conversations have planted seeds of environmental awareness that we hope will grow throughout their lives.

Native Plants, Animals & Their Cultural Significance Our children have been introduced to native plants and animals and have been learning about the special roles they play in Aboriginal culture — as sources of food, medicine, and deep spiritual significance. This has sparked wonderful discussions about biodiversity and the importance of protecting the natural environment.

Respect, Community & Belonging At the heart of everything has been a message of respect — for land, for animals, for community, and for one another. Our children are developing a beautiful understanding of what it means to live with care and consideration for the world and the people around them.

At HCMC, we acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and play, and we pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging. We are proud to walk alongside our children as they begin this important lifelong journey of learning and reconciliation.
